Cable modem is available!

November 10th, 2003 · Comments Off · General

Today I saw several Comcast trucks in my condo complex. When I asked, they said the equipment was being upgraded and we can now get cable modem here.
I’ll probably switch, since BellSouth DSL can be painfully slow at times and I have very frequent disconnects.

Bloated Open Source Software

November 7th, 2003 · 2 Comments · Macintosh

Several months ago, I joined OpenOffice.org and downloaded the source, although I haven’t done much with it. I’ve tried running the application itself (which currently runs under X11) and I find that I dread launching it. OOo is a huge application that loads the word processor, spreadsheet, and other modules when launched. It’s even bigger, [...]

From Salon:

The Pentagon is quietly moving to fill draft board vacancies nationwide. While officials say there’s no cause to worry, some experts aren’t so sure.
The community draft boards that became notorious for sending reluctant young men off to Vietnam have languished sinced the early 1970s, their membership ebbing and their purpose all but lost when [...]

My political compass

November 4th, 2003 · 1 Comment · News and Politics

From Life and Deatherage:
Since everyone else seems to be doing it, I thought I’d give it a try. It says I have an “economic left/right” score of -4.25, and a “libertarian/authoritarian” score of -6.41. Seems about right, I guess. I never felt very Cartesian about any of this, though.
Tim Lambert is tracking [...]

At Your Door in 2004

November 1st, 2003 · Comments Off · News and Politics

This is what I did today. We met at Hagen Park in Wilton Manors and spread out around nearby communities in groups of 2. Each group knocked on 20 doors. My group found 6 interested voters, 2 not interested, and left the surveys for the remaining ones where nobody was home. Pictured is Wilton Manors [...]
