Nice article about Wilton Manors in Salon.
Developer Paul Hugo said he targets gay readers when advertising his luxury properties that will soon be built at three different sites in the city. Hugo and developer Robert Mannino said their project, called Villa Escondido, is promoted every week with full-page ads in the gay-oriented Express. They advertise their projects in mainstream publications, as well, Hugo said.
“What’s happening in Wilton Manors is because of the gay community,” he said. “It was an area ripe for development, and I’ve watched it flourish.”
No longer a sleepy town, Wilton Manors has morphed into a city packed with pricey properties, many starting in the high $300,000s. Developers say they want to attract people who can buy them. (LibertyPost)
Wilton Manors is probably the best proof that a large gay population increases property values. The same thing is now starting to happen in Oakland Park.

Although I’m not anywhere near as extreme, I’ve been going to the gym 3 or more times a week and people are starting to notice that I lost weight & I’m looking good. One of the reasons I moved here was because of the gym in the complex, which I really missed at my old place.
Today is the one year anniversary of iTunes Music Store. It also marks exactly one year since I moved into my condo. I didn’t see the iTunes announcement until late that night, since I was busy moving.
One of my favorite groups, Babaloo is now in iTunes Music Store
Apple has just released Airport 3.4.1. I’ll wait a few days before installing it.
Former Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan is recovering from facial injuries he suffered when he was allegedly attacked in a London pub.
The 46-year-old singer was assaulted at the Joiner’s Arms pub in central London on Monday evening, police sources said.
The Evening Standard newspaper reported that MacGowan suffered a fractured cheekbone after being kicked, punched and hit with a metal bar.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “The motive remains unknown. No property was taken from the victim.”
MacGowan was taken to the nearby St Thomas’ Hospital, but did not stay for treatment.
Two men, aged 20 and 21, were arrested and later released on bail, police said.
The Anglo-Irish singer formed the Pogues in 1982, fusing punk and folk music. The band had a UK top 5 chart hit with “Fairy Tale of New York,” featuring Kirsty McColl, in 1987.
MacGowan left the Pogues in 1991 and has since performed with his own backing band, the Popes. [via CNN]
Via Boing Boing Blog:
“Hot on the heels of the Grey Album comes another innnnteresting mash-up/bootleg project that was originally posted as a collaborative challenge to DJs in February. The goal: Take one track from the Clash’s “London Calling,” and “remix it, add to it, subtract from it
- put your own tributary spin on it.” The result is “London Booted” – 19 tracks (plus a few bonus extras) of eclectically reinterpreted Clash. In return for the download, the project organizers are asking listeners to donate to one of several charities, including Future Forests, a reforestation initiative that was a favorite of Joe Strummer. For £17.50 you can even have your own tree in Joe Strummer’s Rebel Woods, a future forests project on the Isle of Lucy… er… Skye.”
I’m fond of “Bubba’s Got a Brand New Cadillac,” “What about Brixton,” and “(Spanish Bombs) over Baghdad,” a mashup with a track from Outkast’s Stankonia. Hmmmm…. Outklash? Link to London Booted home, and try this alternate site if that doesn’t work.
I just purchased 4 songs from iTMS and only two were downloaded before I got an error. When I try to check for purchased music, I get an ‘unknown error’ 11502. I also haven’t been able to log in to my .Mac email this morning.

This whole mess demonstrates why HFS metadata needs to go. When file types are identified by two different methods, it’s inevitable that they’d get out of sync, causing these kind of problems. We also need to get rid of resource forks for a portable cross-platform file system.
According to Apple’s financial results reported today, they shipped 749 thousand Macs and 807 thousand iPods. Mac sales are still up 5% over one year ago, although iPod sales are up 909%.
iTunes Music store normally censors offensive words by replacing letters with asterisks. When I checked the new releases today, I found one that wasn’t. If you click on it to view the album, however, the title is censored.
Click only if you’re not offended by the ‘F’ word
Since WorldBeatPlanet and ShareYourMusic.com share the same Drupal installation, I just enabled the file upload module at WorldBeatPlanet. I created a new user role, Artist, to allow uploading & maintaining tunes. Any user can download tunes.
Question: LaunchBar or QuickSilver? [from NSLog();]
I also prefer LaunchBar. I’m now using the 4.0 beta and it seems pretty stable. I had resisted trying it for a long time, since I used DragThing and I was satisfied with it. When I finally tried LB for the first time I was hooked instantly and purchased it the next day. Now I rarely make the trip to DragThing – it’s just faster to hit a key and type a few letters.
I tried QuickSilver but I got annoyed with it pretty quickly. None of the 3 options are as nice as LaunchBar’s unobtrusive little bar.
The best thing about LaunchBar is that it learns. I can now type ‘IN’ to launch Interarchy, ‘FF’ to launch FireFox, or ‘MW’ for MS Word.
I just updated ShareYourMusic.com & WorldBeatPlanet.com to Drupal 4.4 final. The update was completely painless. I also changed the appearance of ShareYourMusic since a lot of people complained about the black background.
I also tweaked the default theme at MacMegasite slightly, getting rid of some graphics on the front page to make it load faster and use less bandwidth.
ShareYourMusic.com was mentioned in the latest issue of MacWorld, so it’s starting to see a bit more activity. I still have plenty of bandwidth & disk space to handle it. I’m planning to upgrade to Drupal 4.4 this weekend.
The last few days I’ve been getting 5-6 comment spams. It appears that they’re being added manually, since I’ve already renamed the comment script. I delete them immediately with MT-Blacklist and ban the IP address they came from. I really need something better – I can’t wait for MT 3.0 with the comment registration system.
My M-Audio Keystation 49E arrived. It worked immediately when I plugged it in – no software needed. It looks a lot nicer than most cheap MIDI keyboards I’ve seen, and the keys have a nice feel. I’ll write a full review at MacMegasite in the next day or so.
On this day in 1994, Kurt Kobain killed himself.
At first I hated Nirvana. The first thing I noticed about them was their poor musicianship, but when I look back on them I realize just how important they were. Kurt was the real thing. His music came from his soul. There was nothing at all phony about Nirvana. Kurt was tortured by his drug addiction and an unhappy childhood. He gave voice to his pain through his music.
Wil wrote this piece about him. Read more here by other writers.
I had ordered a m-Audio Keystation 49E from MacMall at the beginning of February. Every time I called about it, the ship date was pushed back. For a long time they said it would ship Mar. 31, which didn’t happen. Now they don’t expect to receive any until the end of this month. I checked other online stores and the story was the same everywhere. I finally canceled the order today and ordered one from the Apple Store, where it’s in stock and will ship in 1-2 days.
UPDATE: it just shipped!
