Mac vs. PC Cost Comparison

May 17th, 2004 · Comments Off · Macintosh

O’Reilly Develper Network has an interesting Mac vs. PC cost comparison.
Their conclusion is that it isn’t possible to get a PC with the same capabilities as the $799 eMac such as video editing for under $1000.

Opera

May 14th, 2004 · Comments Off · Macintosh

At first I hated Opera 7.5, but now I’m starting to like it. I’m trying to use it as my default browser because it’s faster than Safari. I found that I could get rid of most of the toolbars & the sidebar to make it less cluttered. The only problem I find is that itms: [...]

TinyELF 1.0

May 14th, 2004 · Comments Off · Macintosh, Programming

My first computer was a COSMAC ELF. Here’s an emulator for OS X.
The ELF was based on RCA’s 1802 processor, a very simple low-power CMOS CPU. It featured 16 general purpose registers (16 bits each) and a very simple clean instruction set: the first 4 bits of each 8 bit opcode specified the operation [...]

Movable Type RIP

May 13th, 2004 · Comments Off · Programming, Web

With MT being commercialized and the free version crippled, I’m considering moving to something else. I started with Radio Userland and later moved to MT for a more flexible open product. Now maybe it’s time to move on again. I’m considering maybe pMachine or Drupal (which I already use for a few other sites), or [...]

Phish

May 11th, 2004 · Comments Off · Music

I’ve never really been much of a Phish fan, but I’ve gained a lot of respect for them recently. After watching the VH1 show a few days ago, I realized just how great Trey Anastasio is. He really enjoys his music and he did a great job of trading guitar licks with Barthelemy Attiso of [...]

MacMegasite Hacked

May 11th, 2004 · Comments Off · Web

MacMegasite was hacked this afternoon, for the first time since I installed the patched version of Nuke. They found a hole that the security patches didn’t fix. I repaired the damage and added a single line of code to patch that hole.
I’m now seriously considering switching to Drupal.

Dave & Trey go to Africa

May 9th, 2004 · Comments Off · Music

I watched the show on VH1 last night about Dave Matthews & Trey Anastasio’s trip to Senegal. I found the visit to Goree Island, where slaves were kept, very painful to watch. Their performance with Orchestra Baobab was great. I hope we’ll hear some Senegalese influence on Dave’s next album.

Not my friends

May 6th, 2004 · 1 Comment · General

Am I the only one who can’t stand “Friends”? I could never make it through an entire episode of that show. The cast is the dumbest & most annoying of any recent TV show. I’m glad it’s over and I can’t wait for all the fuss over it to die down. It’s impossible to turn [...]

Riddled with security holes?

May 4th, 2004 · Comments Off · Macintosh

This techworld article is fucking bullshit; the worst anti-Apple hatchet job I’ve seen in a long time. He should take a look at Windows before he calls Mac OS X “riddled with security holes”.

Apple has released a range of patches for security holes - both old and new - for its Mac OS X operating [...]

Bloated OS

May 4th, 2004 · 2 Comments · Programming

Anyone who thinks OSX is bloated should read this:
Microsoft is expected to recommend that the “average” Longhorn PC feature a dual-core CPU running at 4 to 6GHz; a minimum of 2 gigs of RAM; up to a terabyte of storage; a 1 Gbit, built-in, Ethernet-wired port and an 802.11g wireless link; and a graphics processor [...]

New DVD Player

May 3rd, 2004 · Comments Off · General

A few days ago I bought a new DVD player, a Samsung DVD-P241, when I started having trouble with my old one (which was almost 5 years old). The new one cost less than half the price of my old one and it’s a lot better.
One really cool feature is the ability to play MP3 [...]

Paypal Scam

May 2nd, 2004 · Comments Off · General

I just received the most realistic PayPal scam email yet. I was immediately suspicious for two reasons: it was sent to an address that was NOT my primary PayPal address; and it said that I haven’t logged into my PayPal account for a long time, yet I had just logged in yesterday.
I noticed that it [...]
