Hurricane Frances seems to be heading right in our direction. Unless it changes course, it looks very bad. It will most likely hit Friday or Saturday.

Diebold Machines Appear to Have Built-in Code for Fraud

August 31st, 2004 · Comments Off · General

From Morons Dot Org: There are 1,000 of these machines, the so-called central tabulators, each of which can handle up to 2 million votes at a time. They are used in more than 30 states, tabulating something
like 50% of the vote. And they can be manipulated.

Basically the way it works is this. These machines store [...]

It still doesn’t suck

August 30th, 2004 · Comments Off · Macintosh

I upgraded to BBEdit 8.0 today. I still haven’t had a chance to check out all of the new features, but it looks like a winner. The new server preview feature which can now preview PHP pages directly in BBEdit alone is worth the upgrade price.

Will the LCR endorse Bush?

August 30th, 2004 · Comments Off · News and Politics

Via Salon: The Log Cabin Republicans are opposing the GOP’s intolerant, homophobic platform and pleading for a return to center:

As our nation’s eyes are on New York City for the Republican National Convention, Log Cabin’s mission, our courageous delegates and our GOP allies are under intense attack from the radical right. The Republican Party Platform [...]

New kind of comment spam

August 26th, 2004 · 1 Comment · Web

I’ve seen a new kind of comment spam at MacMegasite recently. The title is always a single word or a name and the content is a long string of random words, each of them a link. I haven’t looked at the URLs or followed the links. I assume it’s to boost their page ranking. When [...]

I just posted an article at MacMegasite detailing how I set up my Linux server for optimal usage with a Mac network.

Bush on tribal sovereignty

When asked about tribal sovereignty, this was Bush’s answer. It sounds exactly like a student bull****ing his way through an essay question he knows nothing about.

Linux server setup

August 23rd, 2004 · Comments Off · Linux, Macintosh

I now have my Linux server fully set up. One of my main uses for it is a file server for my Mac network. I tried Netatalk but had lots of problems with long filename handling & dealing with case sensitivity. When I would copy folders to the server, it would complain about file names [...]

Bluetooth remote control software

August 20th, 2004 · Comments Off · Macintosh

Am I the only one who doesn’t like Bluetooth remote control software like Salling Clicker or Romeo? I’ve tried both but aside from the initial novelty value I find them useless. It’s easier to just go to my mac than dig through several levels of menus on my Sony Ericsson T610 to access its controls. [...]

Linux install

August 19th, 2004 · Comments Off · Linux

I decided to go with Libranet, a Debian based distribution with enhanced system administration utilities. I got it installed in less than an hour and everything worked perfectly. However, I’ve spent most of today updating the packages from apt, which has taken a lot longer than the original installation. Most of the time was spent [...]

DSL Extreme

August 18th, 2004 · Comments Off · Web

I upgraded my BellSouth DSL service to DSL Extreme, which includes a static IP address and promises speeds up to 3000/348 for only $5/month more. I eliminated an optional service which was costing $5.50/month, so I’m still paying the same amount. I tried a few speed tests and I now see speeds of about 2300/304. [...]

Tarika

August 17th, 2004 · Comments Off · Music

Until now I’d never heard Tarika, the popular group from Madagascar, although I was aware of them. Today I found their album TARIKA 10: BEASTS, GHOSTS AND DANCING WITH HISTORY in iTunes Music Store and fell in love at first listen. I actually like all of the tracks and ended up buying the whole album.

Server Update

August 14th, 2004 · Comments Off · Linux

The server shipped and should arrive Thursday. I’ve downloaded a few Linux distributions to decide which one to use. I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to Debian, Libranet, and Gentoo. I’ll see which one works best.

New Server

August 12th, 2004 · Comments Off · Linux

I’ve ordered my new server, an AMD DURON 1.6GHz barebone system ($359 as configured) from CPU Solutions. I decided to go with Gentoo Linux as my OS. It’s not the fastest system, but it’s a lot faster than my old G3/350, which worked pretty nicely as a file server.

Server Replacement

August 12th, 2004 · Comments Off · Linux, Macintosh

It looks like a drive hardware failure. Since that machine is a fairly old 350 MHz G3 with a crappy IDE controller that can’t handle larger drives, I’ve decided to replace it with a Linux box, which will have at least a 120G drive. I’ll most likely use NFS for the file server.
