Why this election is important

September 13th, 2004 · Comments Off · News and Politics

Via Kicking Ass:
“If Bush wins re-election you’re going to have a very conservative judiciary,” University of Houston political scientist Robert Carp said on Thursday. “An average president puts in about a third of the federal judiciary in two terms, so this really is a watershed year in terms of what happens.”
….
“George W. Bush is the [...]

Simplifying RSS

September 13th, 2004 · Comments Off · Web

After reading Jon’s weblog entry, I decided to try Bloglines and I love it. Before Bloglines, I was subscribed to 140 feeds in NetNewsWire and found that I couldn’t keep up with the new items.
Since there are only a few feeds I need to monitor continuously, such as VersionTracker & a few Mac news sites, [...]

Getting back to normal

September 12th, 2004 · Comments Off · Local

Life is returning to normal after hurricane Frances. It now looks like Ivan won’t hit us, so people are taking down their shutters and moving stuff outside. I unsealed my patio doors and moved stuff back out on my patio. I haven’t had a chance to finish taking down the boards yet, but I plan [...]

I’ve just installed the latest Firefox and found a pleasant surprise. For any web site with RSS links in the header, it will display little RSS icon in the bottom right corner of the window. When you click the RSS icon, it will add a bookmark folder for that site containing the items in the [...]

Ernie Ball & Donald Leslie (RIP)

September 10th, 2004 · Comments Off · Music

Via Boing Boing Blog: It’s a sad week in music instrument history. First, the death of Donald Leslie, who invented the Leslie Rotating Speaker, which gave Hammond organs their trademark sound. And yesterday, pioneer guitar string maker Ernie Ball gave up the ghost at just 74. Ernie Ball’s strings are as ubiquitous in rock and [...]

Linux Print Server

September 9th, 2004 · Comments Off · Linux

I’ve connected my Epson Stylus C82 to the Linux box and I’ve set up CUPS to allow browsing & remote printing. It took a few hours of trial and error, but I’m now able to print to it from any of my Macs.

The changes to /etc/cups/cupsd.conf were to add the commands:

Browsing On
BrowseAddress 192.168.0.255
BrowseAllow 192.168.0.*

Also, for [...]

Ivan the terrible

This doesn’t look good. We now have a category 5 hurricane heading towards us. A lot of people are still without power from Frances and there are food & gas shortages in many areas.

After the storm

September 5th, 2004 · Comments Off · Local

We still had more wind and very heavy rain after my last entry. We now have some very bad flooding in my apartment complex and the surrounding streets. We never lost power, although homes on the other side of the street are still without power. The traffic lights on my street are out. The worst [...]

Frances Update

The worst of it is over, although we still expect strong winds & rain for a few more hours. I never lost power. We didn’t have any major damage around my building, but we did have a lot of branches down. When it’s safe later today, I will check the rest of the complex. Here [...]

Cat reaction to the storm

September 4th, 2004 · Comments Off · Local

For the first part of the day, Cody was freaking out, running and hiding whenever the wind got really loud, but after a while he went to sleep and seemed to get used to it. Midnight stayed pretty calm most of the time. I put towels around the bottom of my windows & sliding doors. [...]

Frances Update 2

September 3rd, 2004 · Comments Off · Local

We just got hit by the first fringe of Hurricane Frances. We’re having wind gusts of about 15-20 MPH and heavy rain. This is just a prelude of what we can expect tomorrow. I had just finished walking around the complex with some of my neighbors removing or securing anything that could become a projectile.

Frances Update

Everyone is rushing to do last minute preparations for Hurricane Frances, although it now looks like it won’t hit until late tomorrow, rather than tonight as originally predicted. We’re removing everything outside our buildings which could turn into a projectile and making sure everyone clears off their patio. At 2PM we’re walking around the [...]
