Cheney’s Hypocrisy

October 15th, 2004 · Comments Off · News and Politics

Isn’t it funny that Dick & Lynne Cheney are making such a stink about Kerry mentioning their daughter in the debate, yet they didn’t say a word when Alan Keyes called her a selfish hedonist:
Expressing support for a proposed amendment to the Constitution that would ban same-sex marriage — an issue that the vice [...]

MacMegasite update

October 14th, 2004 · Comments Off · Drupal

Today I finally finished the Linux RAID how-to article I’ve been working on for a few days. I’ve been doing a lot of work with Drupal 4.5 and I’ve managed to fix all of the problems I found. I was able to get the article module working & came up with an improved theme. I [...]

Discussion lists

October 12th, 2004 · Comments Off · Web

I’ve been experimenting with discussion lists at worldbeatplanet, but I’m not at all happy with my web host’s setup.
They have a very brain-damaged Mailman installation that always appends the domain name to the list name and there’s no way to get rid of it. If I create listname@worldbeatplanet.com, the name ends up being listname-worldbeatplanet.com@worldbeatplanet.com [...]

Superman is dead

October 11th, 2004 · Comments Off · General

“Superman” actor Christopher Reeve has died of heart failure during treatment for an infection Sunday. Reeve has been confined to a wheelchair since his horseback riding accident in 1995 and has used his visibility to raise funds and promote research into the treatment of spinal cord injuries. Reeve has also been a strong proponent of [...]

Drupal 4.5

October 7th, 2004 · Comments Off · Drupal

I’ve been testing out the release candidate of Drupal 4.5 for MacMegasite. I’ve rewritten the theme, but a few features still aren’t working, most notably the articles module. I also plan to replace the old file module with the new upload feature.
Once I get it straightened out on the test site (running on my Linux [...]

TiVo from DirecTV

October 7th, 2004 · Comments Off · Linux

I upgraded my DirecTV service to TiVo today. Interestingly the manual includes a GNU General Public License - it turns out the box runs a variety of Linux.
TiVo is great - I can pause & rewind live TV at any time and there are lots of recording options, including a wish list that lets me [...]

Last speaker of women’s language has died

October 6th, 2004 · Comments Off · General

Here’s an interesting article I found. There was actually a language in China written & spoken only by women.
Yang Huanyi, the last surviving writer and speaker of an enigmatic language invented and used only by women in a small pocket of central China, has died. She was believed to be in her late 90s.
Mrs. Yang [...]

Tape backups but no CD burning

October 4th, 2004 · Comments Off · Linux

I now have the tape drive working on my server and I was able to make a successful backup. Unfortunately it introduced a new problem: I can no longer burn CDs.
The tape drive (a Seagate TapeStor 20) is connected as the slave device on the same IDE controller with the CDR/DVD combo drive. Both use [...]

Linux RAID

October 2nd, 2004 · Comments Off · Linux

I’ve added the second drive & tape backup to my Linux box today. I still haven’t been able to get RAID fully working.
I’m setting up the drive as RAID level 1 with my existing drive and I’m able to get the new drive to be recognized and created a RAID array containing that one drive [...]
