I haven’t been receiving email notifications when comments are held for moderation, so I didn’t release new comments for several days until I happened to check the comment moderation queue and discovered them. I think I’ve fixed it now.

Patio enclosure
April 25th, 2005 · Comments Off · General
I’ve been waiting since December to have my patio enclosed. They measured it when I placed my order, and it took all this time to get the necessary permits and all of the required materials. They guy came this morning and after working a few hours he discovered the manufacturer sent the wrong windows. Now [...]

The new single by Dave Matthews Band, “American Baby” is now available for sale in iTunes Music Store. Dave previously refused to allow them to carry his music.

Conflict of interest

A news item was submitted to MacMegasite announcing a new release of a product that competes with Computrace. Even though the site has no connection with Absolute Software and doesn’t represent the company or their products, I can’t allow it to be used to promote competing products.

Trauma-free flea protection
April 22nd, 2005 · Comments Off · Uncategorized
Putting a flea repellent like Frontline on Midnight is usually pretty traumatic and he usually ends up hiding under the bed. Today I discovered an easy no-fuss way to do it. I give him a bowl of food and while he’s eating, I put it on him. He doesn’t even seem to notice and never [...]

Quote for the day
April 22nd, 2005 · Comments Off · News and Politics
Andrew Sullivan:
“I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute — where no Catholic prelate would tell the President (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote — where no church or church school is granted any public funds [...]

MacMegasite upgraded
April 20th, 2005 · 2 Comments · Drupal
I just upgraded MacMegasite to Drupal 4.6. The upgrade was very easy, since it doesn’t use the event module.

Microsoft abandons gays
Microsoft Corporation pulled its support for a gay rights bill in Washington state last month after complaints from a single radical right anti-gay leader, according to an article just published in the Seattle paper, The Stranger (the article is on the news stands already, online Thursday).
The radical right activist reportedly told Microsoft [...]

WorldBeatPlanet & ShareYourMusic updated
April 18th, 2005 · 1 Comment · Drupal
I now have Drupal 4.6 running at WorldBeatPlanet & ShareYourMusic.com. The only difficult part was updating to the new event module. There are a few tricks to it.
The new event module is based on Flexinode, which I wasn’t using previously. It creates a new flexinode type for events and the upgrade script converts most [...]

Drupal 4.6
April 17th, 2005 · 3 Comments · Drupal
I’m now experimenting with Drupal 4.6 on WorldBeatPlanet. I’ve only tried it locally, but everything seems to work nicely so I’ll probably go live with it in the next day or so. The hardest part was switching to the new Event module, which is based on Flexinode.
I have the discography module working very nicely [...]

Discography module
April 15th, 2005 · Comments Off · Drupal
I’ve written a Discography module for Drupal, which I’m now using at WorldBeatPlanet. I got annoyed with the seriously outdated album lists, which were static text pages, so this module takes advantage of Drupal’s database to store album information as a new node type. A URL like http://www.worldbeatplanet.com/discography will display the full discography for all [...]

DreamHost just got cooler

I didn’t see any announcement, but I just found out (thanks to MacInTouch) that DreamHost now supports AFP. I can now mount my home directory from the finder instead of using FTP.

National Day of Reason
April 13th, 2005 · Comments Off · News and Politics
http://www.nationaldayofreason.org/:
Many who value the separation of church and state have sought an appropriate response to the federally-funded National Day of Prayer, an annual abuse of the constitution. Nontheistic Americans (including freethinkers, humanists, atheists and agnostics), along with many traditionally religious allies, view such government-sanctioned sectarianism as unduly exclusionary.
A consortium of leaders from within [...]

Large striped feline, part III

After running the OS Whose Name I Shall Not Mention on my G4 minitower for several days, I’m now about to take the plunge and install it on my PowerBook. I’ve done a complete mirror backup of the PowerBooks internal drive to a bootable external FireWire drive, which I can use to recover in case [...]

Comment spam
April 9th, 2005 · Comments Off · Web
MacMegasite & WorldBeatPlanet just got hit very hard with comment spam, about 50 on each site. Unfortunately there’s no way to mark or delete comments in a batch, so I just went into mysql and deleted all of them. I’m getting really mad and I’ll probably turn posting off on both sites. If this continues, [...]

I’m hooked on the new version of Mail.app. I love Smart Mailboxes - they work just like Entourage’s mail views. I can now have a mailbox which shows all unread messages and one showing mail received today, one of the things I really missed with I switched to Mail. I’m thinking of installing it on [...]

American Baby

I just heard “American Baby”, Dave Matthews Band’s new single. So far I don’t care for it. It just doesn’t sound like a DMB song. Maybe after a few listens, I’ll warm up to it.
