I managed to brick my Gp2x beyond repair when I tried to install the firmware upgrade. I got the ‘upgrading firmware’ screen for 15 minutes, followed by a black screen with nothing happening for 10 minutes. At that point, I reset it & got a white screen. It looks like the boot loader was damaged, [...]

My new GP2X
November 29th, 2005 · Comments Off · Linux
I posted a few more pictures at Flickr.
It still has quite a few glitches, but it’s full of potential. It doesn’t seem to like USB 2.0 ports. It works perfectly with my G4 minitower, which has USB 1.1 only. I was able to get it working with my PowerBook by using a USB 1.1 hub, [...]

The ‘C’ word, part II

My mom has lung cancer. She just had to move into a convalescent home where she’ll get 24 hour care and she has to have oxygen at all times. Because of her age & general poor health, the doctors can’t do much. Today I brought over a lot of her clothes and other items. Visiting [...]

My phone & DSL is working again! A major phone line broke, so my phone was out since Nov. 8 and my DSL went down on Nov. 17. BellSouth promised it would be fixed no later than this Sunday, so they kept their promise. A few people got their phone back as early as last [...]

My phone is still not working and won’t be fixed until Nov. 27 according to BellSouth. To make matters worse, my DSL just stopped working yesterday. Right now the only way I can get online is using my cellphone as a bluetooth modem.

Mac Mini co-location
November 16th, 2005 · Comments Off · Macintosh, Web
One option I’m considering for hosting MacMegasite would be co-locating my Mac Mini somewhere. I’d still like to be able to host my email, DNS, and other services (maybe even MySQL) at DreamHost with the CPU-intensive processing running on my Mac Mini.

I may need a new web host
November 16th, 2005 · 3 Comments · Drupal, Web
I may need to find a new web hosting company. I love DreamHost and I’ve had no problems with them, but my sites are using too much CPU time. I’ve received several warnings about MacMegasite from them like the following:
Unfortunately it appears that your site is using more than your
fair share of system resources on [...]

Yet another tropical depression has formed and it’s expected to develop into tropical storm Gamma, the 24th named storm this season. Thankfully it looks like it probably won’t affect us.
We only have a little more than two weeks left in this hurricane season and it’s been a pretty wild one. I don’t want to go [...]

DirecTV woes & quick service
November 13th, 2005 · Comments Off · General
Someone from DirecTV was here before 9AM yesterday to repair my dish. He ended up replacing it with a new one since it was slightly damaged. It also appears to be mounted better than the old dish, on the parapet wall as it should be, rather than directly on the roof as the old one [...]

Drowning in spam

For the last week or so I’ve been getting a lot more spam than usual and most of it gets past both gmail’s and Mail.app’s spam filter. It looks like they figured out how to trick spam filters, but hopefully they’ll catch up with it soon.

WorldBeatPlanet Changes
November 11th, 2005 · Comments Off · Drupal, Web
I’ve made a few changes to WorldBeatPlanet. First, I’m using a new theme based on the Blix theme with some color changes. The biggest change is the WorldBeatPlanet Store is no longer a separate site - the store is now integrated with the main content. I found that the amazon_items module I was using isn’t [...]

Gypsy Punk Cabaret

I recently discovered Gogol Bordello, which may be New York’s only Gypsy Punk Cabaret band. After one listen I was hooked and I’ve bought a lot of their songs in iTunes. If you haven’t heard them, go right to iTunes and listen now. You’ll be glad you did.

Tax credit for buying a Prius?
November 9th, 2005 · Comments Off · General
I really like the Toyota Prius and I was planning to buy one in a few years but not right now since my Corolla is still new and in good shape. I now find out that I can get a big tax deduction for buying one, so I may buy it sooner rather than later. [...]

Universal builds for PPC & x86
November 8th, 2005 · 5 Comments · Uncategorized
The latest version of XCode allows you to specify separate settings for x86 & PPC code, although it isn’t really obvious how to do it. After some digging I figured it out.
Some of the build settings such as SDKROOT & GCC_VERSION allow you to specify which architecture they apply to by appending _ppc or _i386 [...]
