Avoid Seagate FreeAgent Go drives
June 10th, 2007 · Comments Off · Macintosh
I needed yet another external drive so I can test the Leopard beta and not wipe out either my internal drive or the backup drive I brought with me to SF, so I decided to pick one up at CompUSA.
After looking at several models, I picked the 120 GB Seagate FreeAgent Go. When [...]

Virtualization in Leopard?
June 9th, 2007 · Comments Off · Uncategorized
On the flight to San Francisco, I was sitting next to someone who worked for a software company that specializes in virtualization (not Parallels or VMware). He told me that Apple hired several people to work on virtualization. I suspect Boot Camp in Leopard will involve virtualization.

Alaska Airlines does it again
June 9th, 2007 · Comments Off · General
Once again my checked luggage was delayed. I’m at the hotel now and my bag isn’t here. Unlike Vancouver, the airline paged me and told me that my bag went out on the flight after mine, since the flight from Vancouver to Seattle was delayed, which didn’t give them enough time to transfer my luggage. [...]

VMware vs. Parallels revisited
June 9th, 2007 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized
Right now I’m at YVR waiting to board my flight in a few minutes. While I was waiting I installed VMware Fusion beta 4. I had previously installed Parallels 3.0 so I got a chance to compare the latest versions of both applications. So far Unity looks very cool - unlike Coherence, Windows applications aren’t [...]

Off to WWDC
June 9th, 2007 · Comments Off · General
I’m leaving tomorrow morning for WWDC in San Francisco. I enjoyed the last week in Vancouver and I’m looking forward to coming back here again next month. Vancouver is my favorite city. It’s very easy to get around downtown without a car and Vancouver has more great restaurants than any other city I’ve been to, [...]

Parallels 3.0 rocks
June 7th, 2007 · Comments Off · Uncategorized
Parallels released Desktop 3.0 today, which I pre-ordered as soon as it was announced. Coherence got even better - you can now open Mac applications from Windows or tell Windows to open web pages in the Mac browser. It also seems to use less CPU and doesn’t slow my machine down as much as the [...]

Camino 1.5 doesn’t like CaminoSession
June 6th, 2007 · Comments Off · Macintosh
As my readers probably know, Camino 1.5 was released today. I immediately downloaded and tried it, only to find that it failed to load any page and most menu commands didn’t work. It turns out I still had the old CaminoSession plugin installed. As soon as I removed that plugin (including the input manager), Camino [...]

Playing Tourist
June 3rd, 2007 · Comments Off · General
This is the first time I’ve been in Vancouver for the weekend, so I took advantage of it to play tourist for a change. I didn’t rent a car here, so I took the Big Bus tour, which is $35 for two days, letting you can get on and off the bus at any stop [...]

Reviving a dead iPod
June 2nd, 2007 · 1 Comment · General
I managed to get my iPod working again, by restoring it from a different Mac with iTunes 7.0. Here’s a recap of how to restore an iPod if this ever happens to you.
1. First thing to try is resetting the iPod, by toggling the hold switch on and off and immediately pressing MENU and the [...]

It’s still dead

When I went to bed last night, my iTunes was still restoring my iPod and it appeared to be working. I got up a few hours later to check on it and iTunes was showing an alert saying that the iPod was in restore mode and I needed to restore before I can proceed. When [...]

Dead iPod
June 1st, 2007 · Comments Off · Music
My 80GB video iPod just died. I had just finished loading the CD I just bought (Femi Kuti Definitive Collection). When I finished and disconnected it, I couldn’t put it to sleep by holding the play button, so I reset it. It then kept rebooting continuously and wouldn’t appear in iTunes so I couldn’t even [...]

Vancouver day 1
June 1st, 2007 · Comments Off · General
Since I came here for work, I spent most of the day in the office. As always, I like to explore downtown Vancouver after work. I don’t have a car here, but fortunately downtown is very easy to get around by foot. The weather is great; it’s in the 70s and I was able to [...]
