They had planned to replace the tile today, but the machine they needed to remove the old tile wasn’t available. They had reserved it yesterday, but it had been given to someone else. Instead, they moved the pipes behind the sink, did some electrical work, and put up supports for the cabinets.

When I checked my email this morning, the first thing I read was the sad news that South African reggae singer Lucky Dube was murdered in an attempted carjacking.

Kitchen renovation day 3
October 18th, 2007 · Comments Off · Linux
The guys moved the pipes behind the washing machine & dryer and did a lot of the electrical work. They do very neat work. Before they leave every day they pick up all of their stuff and vacuum.
The cats are pretty upset about it. They don’t like the noise and having things moved around.

Day 2 of renovation
October 17th, 2007 · Comments Off · Local
The guys did more work on my kitchen today. The sink & remaining cabinets are gone, the washing machine & dryer have been removed and the wall opened so they can move the pipes. Tomorrow they’ll work on the pipes and hopefully get started on the re-wiring.
In a completely unrelated incident, a pipe outside my [...]

irst typed letter missing
October 17th, 2007 · Comments Off · Macintosh
I’ve noticed that my new MacBook Pro often misses the first letter I type. Until now I thought it was just me since the keyboard does feel a bit stiff and I didn’t really think too much of it. Now I see it mentioned in MacFixit. It turns out to be a known issue that [...]

Permission problems
October 16th, 2007 · Comments Off · Macintosh, Programming
Repairing permissions is considered the Mac equivalent of snake oil or waving a dead chicken. It’s usually the first thing suggested for fixing problems, although in most cases it does nothing. There are a few rare problems that it actually does fix, and I encountered one of them today.
One of our customers has been having [...]

The contractor surprised my by starting a day early on my kitchen. All of the cabinets & the stove are gone and he set up a temporary kitchen in the corner of my dining room. He got a lot done in only a few hours. Tomorrow the sink is being removed and the washing machine [...]

Attack of the whiners
October 15th, 2007 · 1 Comment · Macintosh
Since Apple’s recent success, every whiner and troll has taken aim at them. Greenpeace, in particular, has been taking every opportunity to attack Apple, even though other companies have much worse environmental records.
Similarly, every phone company sells all of their phones locked, yet Apple is the only company that’s being criticized and even sued for [...]

Kitchen Remodeling
October 15th, 2007 · Comments Off · General
I’m about to have my kitchen remodeled. The contractor came last week & measured everything and he hopes to get started later this week. I’m replacing my ugly laminate cabinets with oak and adding more cabinets, replacing the laminate countertop with granite or quartz, getting rid of the ugly ceiling panels, and replacing the ancient [...]

Backing up with an rsync server
October 13th, 2007 · Comments Off · Macintosh
I’ve tried many solutions to do a daily sync backup of my MacBook Pro to my Terastation, but I was never really happy with any of them. Among the software I’ve tried were Chronosync (which is probably the best of the bunch), Synk Pro, and Deja Vu.
Samba on the Terastation can be painfully slow [...]

My first DSLR
October 12th, 2007 · Comments Off · Photography
My Nikon D40x arrived via UPS late this afternoon. It’s very easy to set up, and in a few minutes I was able to use the automatic mode, which is just as simple as a point and shoot camera. I haven’t finished reading the manual, so I’m still not familiar with all of the features. [...]

When I checked my email first thing this morning, I got my download link for In Rainbows. The download was very quick, so it looks like they were prepared for the heavy traffic.
It grabbed me right away with the track “15 Steps”. The album is a lot more upbeat than Radiohead’s other albums. I’ve listened [...]
