I got to San Francisco on time, and even more amazing, my luggage arrived with me. I only had 25 minutes for the connection in Salt Lake City because my first flight arrived about 15 minutes late. When I got to the gate (which was in the next concourse from where my first flight landed), [...]

Road Trip

I’m on my way to San Francisco for Macworld Expo! I’m now sitting in the terminal at FLL waiting for my flight. The free wifi here is very fast.
I thought I lost my 80Gb iPod Video going through security, but it just fell out of the pocket and into the main compartment of my laptop [...]

MacHeist Update
January 13th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Macintosh
I bought the MacHeist bundle yesterday. Only $17,337 needs to be raised for charity before Pixelmator gets unlocked! Since Pixelmator sells for $59, even without any of the other applications it makes the $49 bundle worthwhile.

FlickrFan + PhotoPresenter = Flickr Slide Show
January 13th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh
I finally decided to try FlickrFan, Dave Winer’s application that downloads photos from your Flickr RSS feeds. A few days ago I bought PhotoPresenter when MacZOT offered it. The two work great together - simply add FlickrFan’s download folder as a source and you can make a stylish animated slideshow of your photos or your [...]

Obama is not a Muslim, not that there’s anything wrong with it

Dylan Matthews sent me links to two articles at Carpetbagger Report and FactCheck.org which debunk the false claims about Obama that have been making their rounds in chain emails.

Desktop vs. web-based RSS readers
January 12th, 2008 · Comments Off · Web
Nick Bradbury compares the advantages of using a desktop RSS reader (such as NetNewsWire) vs. a web-based reader.
I have been using NetNewsWire for several years, but I recently tried using Google Reader for a few weeks, so I could use the sharing features. I found that I prefer using NetNewsWire and I was glad [...]

Don’t miss Apple Universe Live at Macworld Expo
January 12th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh
Daniel Brusilovsky will be recording the 100th episode of Apple Universe live during Macworld Expo next week. I’ll be there and I’ll be blogging live. I talked to Daniel a few times today and he has some very exciting news.
The live recording will take place on Tuesday, January 15 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. [...]

Performance improvements
January 12th, 2008 · Comments Off · Drupal
I’ve adjusted the cache settings and added the Block Cache module to MacMegasite, which seem to improve the performance. I’ve also had to increase the memory & CPU for my DreamHost Virtual Private Server several times in the last few days when the load got too high. Hopefully with the cache changes I won’t have [...]

Blogging from my iPhone
January 11th, 2008 · Comments Off · General
I’ve set up posting via email both here and at MacMegasite. Since
there’s usually no wifi during the keynote, I’ll attempt to post from
my iPhone as long as there is cellphone reception.

Top ten things in the air
January 11th, 2008 · Comments Off · Fun Stuff, Macintosh
Apple watchers are trying to guess the meaning of “There’s something in the air” on Apple’s tantalizing Macworld banners. Here are some possibilities.
Apple is buying Adobe and adding AIR to the iPhone and building it into OS X
Wireless syncing of iPod & iPhone with Macs
Rent movies wirelessly directly from the Apple TV
Bluetooth headphones for iPod [...]

ars technica posted this shot of the first banner for Macworld. I wonder what it could be… wireless movie rentals directly from the AppleTV?

Sudden jump in subscribers

I noticed today that MacMegasite now has 34526 subscribers to the newsfeed, a sudden jump from the usual 18000-19000.

FeedBurner’s statistics page confirms the sudden jump.

Maybe they ARE serious
January 10th, 2008 · Comments Off · Music
Sony will be selling DRM-free tracks through Amazon. Hopefully this means they’ll drop that stupid trading card scheme.
Now that Amazon will sell DRM-free tracks from all major labels, that leaves iTunes as the only significant store still selling DRM-crippled music. I’ve bought a lot less music in iTunes over the last year for that reason. [...]

How NOT to sell DRM-free music
January 10th, 2008 · Comments Off · Music
Sony BMG can’t possibly be serious about wanting to sell DRM-free albums. The only explanation for their hare-brained scheme is that they want to be able to say that they’re dropping DRM without actually doing it.
To download one of their DRM-free albums (no individual tracks are avaialble), you need to go to a store, buy [...]

Sony BMG’s misguided DRM-free sales
Are they kidding? You have to buy a card that lets you download a DRM-free track. Why not just buy a CD and rip it?

Sharing between NetNewsWire and Google Reader
January 9th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh, Web
I’ve used NetNewsWire for a long time, but I recently started using Google Reader instead for the sharing & suggestion features. Unfortunately the two don’t sync, so switching between them is a bother.
In light of today’s announcement, and because I always found NetNewsWire faster & more convenient than reading news online, I switched back to [...]

Bad news from New Hampshire
January 8th, 2008 · 1 Comment · News and Politics
Hillary Clinton is projected to win the New Hampshire primary, although the race is still very close.
I oppose her very strongly, not only because of all the baggage she brings, but for her anti-progressive record.
To really move on, we need to elect someone NOT named Bush or Clinton. Since 1981 there has been someone in [...]

Pre-Expo Madness
January 8th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh
Macworld Expo starts one week from today, so the anticipation & rumors have reached a fever pitch. Apple’s announcement of new Mac Pro & Xserve models today certainly means they have something much bigger to announce in the keynote.
I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Apple will introduce a subnotebook, possibly with a touchscreen.
I’m [...]
