More on the iPhone jailbreak

January 26th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh

iPhone Atlas warns that the 1.1.3 jailbreak may prevent official third party apps from working.
iPhone firmware 1.1.3 includes a mechanism for approving signed applications. Signed apps use private keys to authorize themselves for installation on the iPhone/iPod Touch. This gets damaged by the jailbreak, although it’s reversable. It does mean that official and unofficial [...]

Why bother?

January 25th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh

Someone came up with a jailbreak for iPhone 1.1.3. I don’t understand why they even bother, when Apple will be releasing an official SDK very soon, which will provide the same capabilities.

MacMegasite happenings

January 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment · Drupal, Macintosh

I’ve made a few changes at MacMegasite and there will be more coming in the next few weeks.
First of all, Daniel Brusilovsky is officially a staff member! Hopefully we’ll add more staff this year. Look for a staff bio page to be added soon.
I’ve also added the mysite module, which lets users set up their [...]

Coolest product of Macworld

January 20th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh

I picked up an Eye-Fi card at Macworld, but I didn’t really get a chance to try it out until now thanks to the crappy WiFi connection and not having my D40x. It works exactly as advertised. I can take a photo and have it uploaded immediately to Flickr without using my computer, and also [...]

Macworld Day 4

January 18th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh

The last day of the show is crazy even though the crowd is smaller. I got a lot more swag today since everyone wanted to get rid of stuff. I spent most of the afternoon in Moscone West, where the smaller and more fun booths were. One company was selling headphones half price. I got [...]

Macworld Day 3

January 18th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh

The only place I could find good connectivity in Moscone South is the corridor outside the exhibit hall. My hotel’s Wifi sucked even worse than usual - I couldn’t obtain an IP address at all.
Instead of buying the overpriced food in Moscone, I took a walk to Metreon for lunch. They have a really cool [...]

Macworld Day 2, Part 1

January 16th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh

Connectivity was a lot better today. Today I discovered that they have a “hidden” network (no SSID broadcast) outside the exhibit hall, so I was able to get online at Moscone South. I took advantage of it to update my iPhone to 1.1.3. The upgrade went smoothly and my iPhone didn’t get bricked.
I went to [...]

Macworld Day 1

January 16th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh

I was up at 4:30 AM and on line before 5:30, yet I only got into the overflow room. I was very disappointed with the lack of internet access and power. I was able to plug in my MacBook Pro a few times to charge it, but I wasn’t able to get online for more [...]

Ready for Macworld

January 15th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh

I got to San Francisco on time, and even more amazing, my luggage arrived with me. I only had 25 minutes for the connection in Salt Lake City because my first flight arrived about 15 minutes late. When I got to the gate (which was in the next concourse from where my first flight landed), [...]

MacHeist Update

January 13th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Macintosh

I bought the MacHeist bundle yesterday. Only $17,337 needs to be raised for charity before Pixelmator gets unlocked! Since Pixelmator sells for $59, even without any of the other applications it makes the $49 bundle worthwhile.

FlickrFan + PhotoPresenter = Flickr Slide Show

January 13th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh

I finally decided to try FlickrFan, Dave Winer’s application that downloads photos from your Flickr RSS feeds. A few days ago I bought PhotoPresenter when MacZOT offered it. The two work great together - simply add FlickrFan’s download folder as a source and you can make a stylish animated slideshow of your photos or your [...]

Sudden jump in subscribers

Sharing between NetNewsWire and Google Reader

January 9th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh, Web

I’ve used NetNewsWire for a long time, but I recently started using Google Reader instead for the sharing & suggestion features. Unfortunately the two don’t sync, so switching between them is a bother.
In light of today’s announcement, and because I always found NetNewsWire faster & more convenient than reading news online, I switched back to [...]

Pre-Expo Madness

January 8th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh

Macworld Expo starts one week from today, so the anticipation & rumors have reached a fever pitch. Apple’s announcement of new Mac Pro & Xserve models today certainly means they have something much bigger to announce in the keynote.
I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Apple will introduce a subnotebook, possibly with a touchscreen.

Trouble with case-sensitive file system

January 7th, 2008 · Comments Off · Macintosh, Programming

One of our customers was having a strange installation problem after upgrading their Mac from 10.4 to 10.5. It turns out they reformatted the drive as a case-sensitive file system. During the installation, a utility gets downloaded from the server. The installation process specifies a pathname to execute that utility, which doesn’t match the case [...]
