Cats prevent heart attacks

Kevin Drum writes: A recent study shows that cats help protect us from heart attacks & strokes. Dogs don’t have the same effect.
The study, by researchers at the University of Minnesota, found that feline-less people were 30 to 40 percent more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than those with cats.
Yet dog owners had the [...]

This polydactyl cat (6 toes on each paw) has been hanging around here and terrorizing the other cats. He often comes to my door and howls loudly. Today I caught him [...]

Cody watching a bird

I haven’t made any cat posts for a while, so here’s a video for a change. I took some video from my Canon A75 of Cody obsessing over a bird.

Cat Fight

Cody spends most of the day outdoors now, but he’ll come in when I call him, usually to eat and then he’ll be whining at the door until I let him out again. I always make sure I get him in to stay before it gets dark.
Today he started getting a little too adventurous. Until [...]

Outdoor Cat

Cody’s getting to be quite an outdoor cat. Every day he stares at the door and meows until I let him out & he stays out most of the day. He usually stays around my building and will come when I call him. I make sure he comes in before I go away. He seems [...]

First trip outdoors

I haven’t written about my cats for a while, so it’s time for a cat post.
This afternoon Cody snuck out for his first trip outdoors (not counting rides in a pet carrier to the vet). Since he doesn’t have claws I always avoided letting him out. I was afraid he’d freak out being outdoors [...]

Cody watching birds

As an experiment, I captured this video with my cellphone this morning. You can hear a bit of Cody’s “bird watching” sound.

Toby’s home!

My friend’s cat Toby, who was missing for 6 weeks, is home! Someone found him a few blocks away from here. He lost some weight and needs a bath but he seems healthy.

Midnight Sleeping
Originally uploaded by mike3k.

Like most cats, Cody & Midnight spend much of the day sleeping.

Toby

My neighbor’s cat Toby has been lost since Sunday night and we’re all pretty worried about him. Toby is very friendly but he’s probably scared & hiding. We put up lots of signs and everyone is looking for him. It’s amazing how many orange cats we have in the neighborhood that look like him.

Rules for cats

This is hilarious and accurate:
DOORS: Do not allow any closed doors in any room. To get door open, stand on hind legs and hammer with forepaws. Once door is opened, it is not necessary to use it. After you have ordered an “outside” door opened, stand halfway in and out and think about several things. [...]

Trauma-free flea protection

Putting a flea repellent like Frontline on Midnight is usually pretty traumatic and he usually ends up hiding under the bed. Today I discovered an easy no-fuss way to do it. I give him a bowl of food and while he’s eating, I put it on him. He doesn’t even seem to notice and never [...]

One of my cats started making a big fuss by the patio, jumping at the window. A few seconds later, Midnight walked into the living room, proudly carrying a lizard [...]

After the fight

After the fight, originally uploaded by mike3k.

Cody & Midnight had a very noisy fight and were chasing each other around the house for several minutes. A little while later, I caught both of them resting on the dining table, looking as if nothing happened.

I took this picture of Midnight the same time as I took the last one of Cody. Both of them were napping before I walked into the room.

Cat Grooming

Instructions on a cat grooming product:
