Aperture tip: track photos uploaded to Flickr

August 24th, 2008 · No Comments · Macintosh, Photography

I don’t know if this is documented anywhere, but I found that it’s possible to create a smart album to track photos that have been uploaded to Flickr using the FlickrExport plugin.
Uploaded with plasq’s Skitch!
FlickrExport adds a metadata tag with the Flickr URL when it uploads a photo. When you create a smart album, one [...]

PhotoWalk was a success

August 23rd, 2008 · No Comments · Photography

We had a great time at the photowalk today and the weather cooperated. I took over 700 photos (many of them in continuous shooting mode), so I still have a lot more to process.
I uploaded a few that I really like, with a lot more coming later. This one is my favorite so far. I [...]

08-08-08

August 8th, 2008 · No Comments · Photography

Here’s my contribution to the Flickr 888 group.

I didn’t really have a chance to go anywhere to take a lot of pictures, so I just went to my garden and took a few pictures of what was blooming.

Picture of the day

July 9th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Photography

I’ve been watching these baby birds grow up. They’re getting pretty big now.

I used my 55-200mm VR lens for this shot, which I took from the ground in front of my building. I still use the 18-55mm lens which came with the D40x most of the time, since it can focus much closer than the [...]

When to use manual focus

July 2nd, 2008 · Comments Off · Photography

I still have difficulty using manual focus, thanks to my glasses and less than perfect eyesight. For anyone who doesn’t have perfect vision, it can be difficult to see if the subject is perfectly in focus, especially when using a large aperture with a narrow depth of field.
However, there are some instances where you have [...]

Watermark

June 30th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Macintosh, Photography

The Watermark plugin is fully working. I’m now working on the documentation and I hope to release it in a day or so.

Here’s my first official copyright marked picture, which I took today. This baby bird is nesting outside my neighbor’s window.

I survived the Photowalk

June 22nd, 2008 · Comments Off · Local, Photography

I had a great time at the Fort Lauderdale Photowalk today, and the weather cooperated, at least most of the time. We met at Las Olas Riverfront at around 9:30 AM. After the introductions, we went north on Brickell Avenue to SW 2nd Street.

We then went west, across the railroad tracks, to the Museum of [...]

Photo of the day

June 16th, 2008 · Comments Off · Photography

When I was walking home from the gym this evening, the sunset was really spectacular, so I rushed home to get my camera and take a few shots. Since time was running out, I didn’t bother taking the tripod. Here’s a 3 exposure HDR made without a tripod, using Photoshop’s Merge to HDR & Photomatix [...]

Trust the focus indicator

May 23rd, 2008 · Comments Off · Photography

I’ve been working on my manual focus skills with the 50mm f/1.8 lens. I found that trusting the focus indicator light in the view finder is the key to proper focus. The subject will appear to be in focus across a range of settings, but it’s only in perfect focus when the indicator lights up. [...]

Focus & Depth of field

May 15th, 2008 · Comments Off · Photography

One of the best things about DLSR cameras is that they give you a lot of control over focus, exposure, and depth of field, allowing you to choose exactly how you want your picture to look.
When I photograph flowers or plants, I usually like to use a very narrow depth of field to emphasize the [...]

HDR plugin for Aperture

May 12th, 2008 · Comments Off · Photography

Creaceed has released a new version of Hydra, which includes a new HDR plugin for Aperture 2.1.
It doesn’t offer as many options as Photomatix, but the results are very nice. These were created with the same source images I had previously processed with Photoshop and the Photomatix plugin. The results look very natural, although it [...]

On switching to a DSLR

April 26th, 2008 · Comments Off · Photography

Dean Allen writes about his experience of switching to a Nikon DSLR after using point & shoot cameras for a long time:
I feel like someone handed a slice of hot toast spread with cultured butter after a lifetime breakfasting on Skittles and government cheese.
I can definitely relate. Using a D40x changed the way I think [...]

HDR Image of the day

April 20th, 2008 · Comments Off · Photography

I haven’t done one of these for a while, but the dark clouds inspired me to make an HDR image.

I spent most of the weekend (when I wasn’t working around the house & garden) writing some Cocoa code for FriendFeed. So far I only support the features that don’t require authentication.
